This was a minor F3 event at the very fast Avus circuit, UK based visitors were the Brazilian pair Ronald Rossi and Jose Ferreira in their Brabham-Holbay BT28s. Rossi didn’t even make the start when he collided with Freddy Kottulinsky’s Lotus 69 writing both cars off. In the race Ferreira was leading the race when it suddenly started raining and the slick shod Brabham slid off into the barriers and was hit by Italian driver Biagio Cammarone, both cars caught fire and were burnt out. Ferreira was unhurt but Cammarone was badly burnt and he was rushed to a Berlin hospital. The wet track caused 12 cars to spin out (from 17 who started), Giancarlo Naddeo (Lotus 69) suffered a broken leg and a fractured skull, even more seriously Hannelore Werner’s March 713 hit a marshall who died instantly. The race was red flagged, It seemed unimportant but the race was run by Wolfgang Bülow.
